Listening & Learning II

Last month, our team read Me and White Supremacy by Layla F. Saad. The book is broken up into four weeks with journal prompts for each day. It was so helpful to have this topic front of mind.

The goal of the book is to equip readers to be a “good ancestor” and leave the world better than you found it by combatting racism.

“It is not just the bi-nary black or white of – you either are a racist or you aren’t – rather it is multi-layered behaviors and beliefs that make up a white supremacist world view.” – Layla F. Saad

We took time earlier this week to talk about what stood out to us from our time reading, journaling and reflecting. I wanted to share some of the questions we asked each other with you guys as we continue to learn more together about how to be better allies in this movement for real change.

  • How do we control (either consciously or subconsciously) the way we would like people to communicate their life experiences?
  • When has my silence contributed to accepting the system as it is?
  • In what ways have I been confronted with my own belief that I am exempt or one of the good ones as it pertains to racism?

“We are a part of the problem, but also a part of the answer.” – Layla F. Saad
